There was a time when an advent calendar meant a flimsy cardboard nativity and a chocolate that tasted faintly of the box. Those days are gone. In 2026 the advent calendar has become a small piece of furniture, a status symbol and, in some households, a negotiation. Somewhere along the way it stopped being for the children.
The good ones sell out early, and by the second week of November the best are already on waiting lists. So, before December sneaks up on you with a tray of mince pies, here is our edit of the calendars genuinely worth opening this year, and a few that are worth opening for someone else.
For the Beauty Devotee
Liberty Beauty Advent Calendar. The one the beauty editors queue for. Twenty-nine products, twenty-one of them full size, with a total value of over £1,300 and a handful of golden tickets hidden inside. It sells out every year, usually with a certain amount of drama.
Selfridges Beauty Advent Calendar (£250). Forty products, thirty-three full size, and very little filler. If you only buy one beauty calendar, this is the sensible choice, and we say sensible in the nicest possible way.
Dior Le 30 Montaigne (£604). For someone who would rather have one perfect thing every day than twenty-four pleasant ones. J'adore, Rouge Dior 999 and a little Dior Prestige. Wrapped like a jewellery box, opened like one too.
Fortnum & Mason Beauty Advent Calendar. Twenty-four full size products and a travel size, from houses such as Clive Christian and Ortigia, in the famous eau de nil. Arguably the most beautiful box on this list.
For the Home (and the Nose)
Jo Malone London Advent Calendar (£375). Twenty-five drawers of colognes, candles and bath treats. The house will smell like a five star hotel lobby by the 12th December, which is no bad thing.
Acqua di Parma (£644). Twenty-four doors ending in a full 50ml Colonia Il Profumo, plus candles that smell of panettone. Italian holiday in a box, without the airport.
Diptyque 25 Scented Treasures. Candles, fragrance and body care, including two exclusive eaux de parfum. For the person whose sitting room already smells of Baies.
The White Company Advent Calendar (£195). Seven full size products and the Winter candle. Calm, cream and completely unobjectionable, much like a good houseguest.
For the Foodie
Daylesford Farmshop Advent Calendar. Twenty-five drawers of truffles, fudge, honey, tea and hot chocolate, in a wooden box that you will keep for years. Very Cotswolds, very lovely.
The Newt in Somerset Advent Calendar. Treats from the estate itself. The perfect excuse to book lunch there in the new year.
Fortnum & Mason Feasting Advent Calendar. Biscuits, preserves, a little brew and a little bake, from the Piccadilly food hall. Fortnum's also make beautiful empty wooden calendars to fill yourself, which is where we come in (more on that below).
For the Whisky Lover
Fortnum & Mason Premium Whisky Advent Calendar (£225). Twenty-five drams from Scotland, Ireland and beyond, including some older and rarer bottles. One a day, purely for research purposes.
Drinks by the Dram, The Very Old & Rare Whisky Collection. Twenty-four wax sealed samples of genuinely rare whisky in an oak and walnut cabinet, with Riedel glasses. Priced like a small car, and enjoyed considerably more.
For the Jewellery Box
Missoma Gold Advent Calendar (£249). Six exclusive gold plated pieces in a velvet case. Stackable, wearable and far easier to justify than you would think.
Annoushka, My Christmas in Charms. Twelve compartments, each holding a piece chosen with Annoushka's client team. Orders close on the 16th November, so if this has just caught your eye, now is the moment.
For the Children (and the Dog)
LEGO Santa's Holiday Countdown (£54.99). Nearly nine hundred pieces, one festive build at a time. Peace and quiet for roughly fifteen minutes each morning.
Hotel Chocolat Grand Advent Calendar (£80). Chocolate slabs and decorations behind large doors. You may need to buy two to avoid a family incident.
Lily's Kitchen Advent Calendar for Dogs (£10.50). Because the dog has been very good this year. Mostly.
The Grand Gesture
And for those who feel that twenty-four small things simply will not do, Dior's La Malle des Rêves is a trunk of twenty-four drawers holding six eaux de parfum, a snow globe and a silk scarf, limited to 170 numbered pieces at £6,500. Nobody needs it. That is rather the point.
A Few Practical Notes
Order now. Most calendars ship within a week, but popular ones go to waiting lists by mid November and do not come back.
Check the start date. Some open on the 1st December and finish on the 24th; others run to the 25th. Twelve day calendars are increasingly common and often start later.
Sending abroad? If the calendar is for someone in Dubai, New York or Geneva, allow extra time for international delivery and customs, especially for anything containing fragrance or alcohol.
Prices and availability were correct at the time of writing, but these things move quickly in November.
Sold Out? Leave It With Us
If the one you wanted has gone, or you would rather something more personal, our team can track down a calendar, have it delivered and wrapped, or build a completely bespoke one: twenty-four little things chosen around the person, from their favourite chocolatier to tickets hidden behind door number 24. It is one of our favourite Christmas requests.
